What determines mass? A question that nears the top of the list of questions asked by physicists today. Is mass something that is intrinsic to matter or is it imparted to it by something else. That something else many physicists think might be the elusive Higgs Boson (tagged by some as the "God particle). If it does exist and how it works no one knows. The European Organization for Nuclear Research, also know as CERN will probably begin searching for it at the beginning of 2010 at the Switzerland/French border where the world's largest machine is based.
The Large Hadron Collider was restarted on Friday, November 20th. It took about 15 years to build it and was an international collaboration.
In the 1960s, British physicist Peter Higgs postulated a clustering effect of the Higgs Boson as the mechanism which imparts mass. According to mathematical theoretical considerations and experimental suggestions some think the Higgs boson as the single missing piece of the Standard Model of particle physics. Some think the Higgs boson is a single particle others think it might be several. At any rate it is the single most hot spot in particle physics because it might answer the question of mass or may lead to new discoveries in particle physics. Where it will lead no one is absolutely sure...but it will lead to new and exciting frontiers where no one has gone before.
